Abstract
As of fall 2009, there are over fifty regional and national green labeling programs throughout the United States. Each of these have similar yet quite different versions of rating systems and qualifying characteristics that they look for in a green building. This paper looks at four of the most prominent programs-- LEED, EnergyStar, Green Globe, and Green Seal--and discusses the methods and limitations of each; it also looks at some building materials that are occasionally marketed as eco-friendly, and analyzes how they measure up for overall "greenness".
