Abstract

The purpose of this treatise is to draw the attention of Western flutists to a new source of flute music, composed by contemporary Taiwanese composers. It is also intended to serve as a reference point for further academic research into Taiwanese instrumental music. A comprehensive catalogue is developed for the findings. A detailed survey of representative flute works is included. The first chapter of this treatise provides general information on Taiwan and includes a brief overview of music categories in Taiwan, the development of Western music in Taiwan, and Taiwanese flute music in the twentieth century. The second chapter provides a comprehensive catalogue of compositions for flute by contemporary Taiwanese composers. The catalogue lists more than two hundred works and is intended to serve as a reference. Works in the catalogue are organized by two methods: compositions listed by instrumentation, and compositions listed by composer. The last chapter of this treatise provides detailed examination of chosen representative flute works written by twenty of the composers. Composers’ biographies, and the author’s stylistic analysis and performance suggestions are included.
