Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to discuss my work on a solo performance piece about the life and career of Hall of Fame baseball player Willie Wells. Mr. Wells played and managed in the Negro Leagues in a career that spanned twenty-five years. The work, entitled The Willie Wells Story, was produced by the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin, Texas. It was written by Robi Polgar and staged by Boyd Vance. It was presented in the museum’s Texas Spirit Theater as a companion piece to the Play Ball!: Texas Baseball exhibit during the summer of 2003. The twenty-minute multimedia presentation on Wells’ life ran for three months and was seen by over two thousand patrons. I hope to provide an overview of my work with members of the local Austin theatre community, what the piece required of me as an actor, and of my continued interest in working in Willie Wells. I hope to develop the project on Wells after I’ve completed my master’s work at the University of Texas at Austin
