Description

The early history of Galveston Island has been so confused with legend that the bare truth of it has been difficult to obtain. In nearly all available accounts the romantic and legendary aspects of the subject have been dealt with at length. The result is that an air of mystery has come to hover over the island's early history, while the founding and growth of the most important city and seaport of early Texas have been lost sight of. Although there are few facts of outstanding importance in Galveston's history before 1836, yet much more has been written on the period prior to this date than following it. In this discussion, therefore, it is my purpose to use the more solid materials available, and to emphasize in particular the development of Galveston since 1836
