Description
The teaching of the physical sciences has been an important field of instruction in the secondary schools of America for seventy or eighty years. It is a field which has gained new impetus during each period when our country has been at war. During the recent World War II large numbers of noted scientists were engaged in research projects and many significant advancements were made in the fields of science. These changes have important relations to the instruction which is given in the secondary schools of this country. This thesis is primarily concerned with four aspects of physical science instruction: 1. The development of science. 2. The development of chemistry textbooks from 1802 to 1944. 3. Modern trends and evaluation in physical science instruction. 4. An analysis of the status of physical science instruction in the State of Texas with special reference to the school years 1937-1938 and 1944-145
