Many young people today are essentially growing up online. Their digital presence is deeply intertwined with their identities as platforms like TikTok provide novel space for people to explore their interests while curating their public image. Algorithmic Folk Theories: How TikTok Shapes How We View Race is a video essay project that explores the effect that social media algorithms have on young people’s self-image, especially people of color, and our collective understanding of race. The film explores the balance between cultural appropriation and appreciation on TikTok and sheds light on the limitations of algorithm-based content moderation, which often privileges white creators. The film also calls on social media companies to readdress their content moderation policies to create a more inclusive digital space.en_US
