dc.description | Khairedemos the Bearded Artisan is a politically Indeterminate member of the Athenian Assembly whose goal is to convince his fellow countrymen of the merit of giving women some measure of political agency—either through suffrage or the formation of a women’s Council. The first response was written after the convening of the second Assembly, wherein the citizens of Athens voted on giving slaves and metics voting rights but intentionally disregarded the political status of women, and the second response was issued after the fifth Assembly session wherein the matter of establishing Councils, or non-voting advisory bodies, was proposed but not followed through with by a vote. While this character is imagined (and the radical nature of his feminist ideas are in reality anachronistic to that time period), his position as an Indeterminate Assemblymember whose sole aim would be to push a single-issue agenda is based on legitimate figures who existed at the time and were some of the first participants in a democratic system. | en_US |
