dc.descriptionThis study represents an attempt to trace changes in materials and methods in elementary algebra throughout a period of one hundred years, beginning in 1829. The use of textbooks for primary source material is based upon the assumption that the textbooks of any period constitute the best index of the practices of that period. The changes noted in materials and methods will be those resulting from refinement of subject matter, also those brought about by the influence of the psychology of learning and teaching
