Migration during an Era of Restriction (biographies), November 4-6, 2009

The Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS) at the University of Texas at Austin is organizing the conference Migration during an Era of Restriction, November 4-6, 2009. Scholars and legal experts will address immigration policy issues and present research findings concerning migration developments in Europe and the United States, as well as in sending communities. Through panel presentations and roundtable discussions, the conference seeks to address the economic, social, and legal restrictions that are affecting international migrant populations in these regions. As a startup to the conference, a panel of graduate student paper presentations on migrant restrictions is being organized for the evening of November 4, which also will serve as a social event to greet arriving conference participants. The main sessions of the conference will take place on November 5 and 6, with tentative plans for a workshop on the morning of November 7 (Saturday) for conference participants who remain behind and want to discuss research agendas and possible collaboration. We have invited researchers, policy analysts, and legal experts from the United States, France, Germany, Spain, Russia, Turkey, Mexico, and Peru to participate in the conference. These specialists will address a wide range of topics including changing immigration policies, ethnic tensions, border control, deportations, remittances, return migration, legal and human rights issues affecting migrants, impacts of removals in sending countries, and the prospects for continuing high emigration rates.
