Abstract
This thesis is a translation and analysis of the Sanskrit poem Dramiḍopaniṣat Tātparyaratnāvaḷi and Sāra by the South Indian philosopher Vedānta Deśika, itself an interpretive translation of the Tamil poem-cycle Tiruvāymoḻi by the medieval poet-saint Nammāḻvār. The history of the religious movements behind both poems and the tradition of calling the Tiruvāymoḻi the “Tamil Veda” are discussed, along with both a poetic analysis of the Sanskrit work and a discussion of the ideas it contains. Vedānta Deśika’s beliefs about and motives for translating the Tiruvāymoḻi are analyzed alongside a treatment of the extent to which he inserted his own beliefs into the translation, attributing them to Nammāḻvār
