The purpose of this thesis is to present an edition of the Gospels contained in two heretofore unpublished Spanish manuscripts of the Escorial, called respectively I.I.6 and I.I.2. These Gospels, which I have named the Alphonsine Gospels because they date from the reign of Alphonso the Wise (1252-1284), have been faithfully reproduced, and have been compared not only with each other, but also with the Latin Vulgate. In addition, a Vocabulary of the archaic words found in them has been prepared, and a study of Syntax, based principally on the Gospel of Matthew, has been made. Since beginning my work, I have learned that the distinguished Spanish scholars, Sres. Americo Castro, Agustin Millares Carlo, and Angel J. Battistessa, are preparing a complete edition of the Mediaeval Spanish Bible, which in addition to two other manuscripts of the period of Alphonso, will contain the whole of the manuscript of which the basis of my study is a part. Indeed, Volume I of their work, comprising the Pentateuch, has already been published (under date of 1927) by the Biblioteca del Institute de Filologia, Facultad de Filosofia y Letras, de Buenos Aires, and I am looking forward with interest to receiving notice of their work in the New Testament
