Don Quijote in the Spanish Speaking World (1605-2005) (program), September 30 October 1, 2005

This conference will celebrate the 400th anniversary of the publication of Don Quijote in 1605 and focus on the tremendous literary influence of Cervantes' great novel throughout the Spanish-speaking world, including Latin America and the American Southwest. The invited speakers are James A. Parr (University of California, Riverside), Rosina Conde (Universidad Autonoma de la Ciudad de Mexico), Manuel Sol Tlachi (Universidad Veracruzana, Mexico), María de los Angeles Gonzalez Briz (Universidad de la Republica, Montevideo, Uruguay), Jesús Maestro (Universidad de Vigo, Spain), and Eduardo Urbina (Texas A&M University). UT Speakers include Rolando Hinojosa-Smith, Michael Harney, Cory Reed, and Madeline Sutherland-Meier. Speakers are subject to change. Also in conjunction with the symposium, the UT Libraries are sponsoring a first-ever collaborative exhibition with the Cushing Memorial Library of Texas A&M University. The exhibit will be open to the public from September 30 through October 14, 2005 in the Life Sciences Library (MAI 201). "The Legacy of Don Quixote in Print: Rare Illustrated and First Editions": A Collaborative Exhibition to Commemorate the Fourth Centenary of Don Quixote, 1605-2005, featuring works from the collections of the Benson Latin American Collection (The University of Texas Libraries), the Cushing Memorial Library and Archives (Texas A&M University) and the Harry Ransom Center (The University of Texas at Austin).
