dc.description.abstract | How do private businesses survive in a weak institutional environment? Without established rule of law, private firms in nondemocracies risk economic losses caused by unconstrained government actions – thus distorting strategies for business survival. The literature focuses primarily on personal connections and bribery as strategies to address political risk for business survival. In China, however, the top-down anticorruption campaign has increased the costs of these strategies while institutional safeguards for property rights remain weak. To address these risks, I argue private businesses establish connections with the government by aligning with policy objectives – e.g., participating in government-led poverty alleviation programs or seeking equity ties with government-owned venture capital. | |
