Abstract

The purpose of this report is to examine the following areas of second language research which affect the speaking development of English language learners (ELL) and can be addressed in the language classroom: social variables, the second language environment, cognitive processes, and personality. A literature review of examples from each area is presented, followed by a summary of the findings from the research and possible implications for teachers.
