Abstract
Since the late-1980s, organized crime in Mexico has experienced tremendous growth. A major contributor to the size and power of drug trafficking organizations today stems from neoliberal policies, such as NAFTA. These policies help create the corporatization and militarization of cartels, which has led to extreme levels of violence in Mexico. With the renegotiation of NAFTA, this historical perspective seeks to offer some suggestions for decision-makers from both countries.
