The career of Archibald Johnson Rose should be of interest to all students of the American frontier as well as to those whose primary interest lies in the field of political economy. The first group finds an interest in him because his experiences in his early life made him a typical American pioneer. He appeals to the second group because he led the farmers of Texas in the greatest crusade that this class has ever made in the history of the State to elevate itself educationally and socially and to obtain economic security. A study of his life reduces itself to an inquiry into the history of the Grange and co-operative movements, the means by which the farmers hoped to attain their objectives
