Description
South Asian American domestic violence services are a microcosm of the mainstream landscape of domestic violence services in America. They emerged in major cities during the latter half of the twentieth century. There are approximately thirty South Asian-centric domestic violence nonprofits in the country. They offer culturally sensitive and trauma-informed services to mainly South Asian women (and refugee populations) facing domestic abuse. While they don’t explicitly withhold services from non-South Asians or men, their use of heteronormative language may prevent members of the LGBT community from accessing their services. This cross-sectional study is an assessment of the current scope of LGBT-inclusive services offered by these grassroots nonprofit organizations.
