Abstract

This thesis provides an analysis of the German media’s coverage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which took place in Qatar from November 20 to December 18. The tournament represented an unequivocal global first—the first games hosted in the Middle East or in the depths of winter. In Germany, a country known for its successful national team, the 2022 Cup was marked by novel disinterest and frustration from fans, who did not want to see their nation endorse Qatar’s anti-human rights agenda.
