Description

This thesis presents the results of an investigation into how Beethoven's piano sonatas were reviewed and treated in musical journals and books on theory and piano playing published in England and America during the nineteenth century. The focus is not on Beethoven's sonatas themselves, but on the effect they had, and on the ways in which they were received, analyzed, and interpreted during this period. The thesis, therefore, falls within the parameters of two new fields of investigation to which musicological interest has turned in the past decade, particularly in Germany, namely Wirkungsgeschichte and Rezeptionsgeschichte
