Abstract

Vocal factions of the American far right celebrated the Taliban’s 2021 defeat of the US, identifying the Taliban and other radical Islamist groups as role models for the successful implementation of traditionalist, patriarchal values. This thesis examines the historical precedent for such a stance, analyzing case studies from across 500 years of Western valorization of Islam.

Offering a series of case studies including Martin Luther, David Urquhart, Michel Foucault, and Sacco Vandal, this thesis shows the critical importance Islam has played in generating ideas for Western countercultural political movements that do not identify themselves as 'Islamic'.
