Abstract

The workplace is constantly searching for faster and easier ways to get work done. Within large corporations, communication is key. In order to successfully complete work, the communication processes within the workplace must be well organized and effective. How can a corporation best communicate through technology? Through this inquiry, intranets emerged as a common focus. Intranets are internally facing websites only accessible by employees. My thesis for this paper centralizes around the following question: What makes up an effective intranet? I first begin with a discussion on the definition of an intranet, followed by a brief history of intranets. The next section aims to explain the main aspects that makeup an intranet system. I also evaluate the effectiveness of these aspects within an intranet. The following section outlines the problems that arise within the intranet system and how to address these problems. Lastly, I evaluate successful modern examples of intranets that have won awards this past year. To conclude, I provide my insight as to what I deem important when crafting an intranet system.
