Houston journalist Allan Turner has been a long-time student of Texas and the South, both on and off the job. In his more than 20 years at the Houston Chronicle, Turner has held a variety of editing and reporting positions, including a journalistic tour of duty as roving state reporter. Now a senior city-side reporter, he also has worked in Amarillo, Austin, and San Antonio. Turner has contributed to Texas Folklore Society publications, and is coauthor of Transparent Tales: An Attic Full of Texas Ghosts, with Chronicle reporter Richard Stewart. The musical performance and oral history recordings in the collection are outgrowths of Turner's study of southern culture and history. Many of the recordings were made during a ten-year "Alan Lomax phase" in which Turner traversed Texas and Louisiana in search of authentic folk expression.
