Chamber Suite No. 1: “Outburst” represents the culmination of my musical education at the University of Texas at Austin. Rather than being programmatic music, the title refers to an ‘outburst’ of thoughts, feelings and musical ideas. It is in three untitled, yet distinct movements. The first movement begins with dense, chaotic music from the entire ensemble before quickly dissolving into a 5/8 ostinato, which builds intensity before climaxing with a fanfare-like ending. Its tense and unrelenting nature contrasts sharply with the second movement, which begins with an unaccompanied solo for the english horn. Out of that solo instrument emerges a lush, lyrical slow movement which unfolds with increasingly dissonant harmonies and metric modulations before fading back into the original unaccompanied english horn. The third movement again opens strikingly, before settling into a new main theme. Layers of the theme begin to pile up in canon, building to crashing chords that give way to a contrasting middle section, referencing the lyrical music from the second movement. The canon reenters at maximum density, but quickly withers away to a single chord, providing a brief moment of respite before the movement races to an exciting, high-volume finish.
