Description

The early history of Texas, viewed through the long period of intervening years, has become so composite that many of the individuals who helped to make it have been obscured in the whole. So much has this been true that much of the richness and many of the facts of history have been lost beyond recovery. Nevertheless, the fact remains that the motives, activities, and accomplishments of individuals, singly or collectively, vitalized and shaped the course of the period and gave meaning to its history. Such an individual was Frost Thorn. History has recorded his early settlement in Texas, but it has failed to recognize him as a man whose multitude of activities helped to give life, color, and character to the era of settlement and development. In order that more light may be thrown upon the history of Frost Thorn, it is the purpose of this study to delve into his life and activities with the aim of determing the part that he played in the social, political, and business affairs of Texas between 1825 and 1854, with particular emhasis upon his activities as a land speculator.
