Description

Thursday. Dervishing: Dervish, derived from Persian and meaning "seeking doors." Dervishing: "I am a bird of the heavenly garden / I belong not to the earthly sphere, / They have made for two or three days / A cage of my body." - Mevlana Jalalu-ddin Rumi. Dervishing: For over 700 years, men in black cloaks have performed a whirling dance in a continual remembrance of their Creator. The poet and mystic, Jalalu'ddin Rumi began the whirling dance and established the dervish order known as the Mevlevis. Dervishing is inspired by photographs and written descriptions of the Mevlevi order. Davenport Memoirs (1991-1994): Newlyweds, Seven Years, Offspring, End of the Circle. Virtual Bodies is an outgrowth of Dancing with the Virtual Dervish, a collaborative work in virtual environments, by Diana Gromala, Marcos Novak and Yacov Sharir. Funded by the Canadian government through a two-year residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Banff, Canada, this project received additional support from The University of Texas at Austin College of Fine Arts. Dancing with the Virtual Dervish concluded with a performance-exhibition at the Banff Centre for the Arts in March of 1994.
