Modeling heat-induced deformation of plastic sheets with numerical minimization

By heating thin, flat sheets of PETG using a pointed heating element, we caused a buckling shape to form in the structure of the sheets. The shape we observed is of interest because it contains an unexpected peripheral ridge. Using the F oppl-von K arm an equations, we have coded an algorithm to solve for the case of a fi nite, circular, punctured and thin sheet undergoing symmetric radial stress from the center. This code serves as a model for our case of a thin sheet with a change of internal metric in some small area|which we induce experimentally using heat.
