The first Research + Pizza of 2016 examines a dark side of popular culture as relates to fandom.
Dr. Suzanne Scott (Radio-TV-Film) discusses the tendency of fan culture to privilege masculine forms of fan engagement, and how that might marginalize female fans. She’ll talk about what she uncovered in her recent book, Revenge of the Fanboy: Convergence Culture and the Politics of Incorporation, and look to the latest installment of the Star Wars franchise to explore the ways in which gender roles are presented in associated merchandise. Her work has appeared in the journals Transformative Works and Cultures, the Cinema Journal, and New Media & Society, as well as numerous anthologies, including How to Watch Television, The Participatory Culture Handbook, and Cylons in America: Critical Studies in Battlestar Galactica.
