Design of the Armature Windings of a Compensated Pulsed Alternator Engineering Prototype

The design of the armature winding& of a 6 kV, 70 kA compensated pulsed alternator engineering prototype now under construction at The Univeraity of Texas at Austin is presented. Electromagnetic forces acting on the windings and the resulting mechanical and electrical stresses placed on the armature insulation are given. Test results of a program to select the ground plane insulation system are described. Finally, fabrication methods, tooling, and problems encountered during construction are discussed.
