Bulk Applications of HTSC--A Machine Designer’s Perspective

The prospect of practical high temperature superconductors (HTSC) has fired the imaginations of all electrical machine designers. Reduced refrigeration requirements are the most obvious advantage, but the implications of HTSC are far broader than this advantage implies. To appreciate the real impact of HTSC upon bulk applications, it is necessary to examine some potential applications in more detail. Bulk applications of HTSC may be divided into several categories with common requirements. Although by no means inclusive, HTSC bulk applications can be characterized as current transport, shielding, energy storage, and magnetic field production. Promising bulk applications of HTSC include upgrading heavily loaded ac power transmission lines in urban areas, shielding low frequency electromagnetic fields, smaller scale magnetic energy storage devices, and providing electric machine designers with more freedom to increase specific machine performance.
