Homopolar Motor-Generator for Inexpensive Inertial Energy Storage

During the last six months, the Energy Storage Group has completed the assembly of the five megajoule homopolar motorgenerator and begun an extensive testing and evaluation program on the unit. The study of the fundamental limitations on homopolar machine discharge times has also been continued. Other projects completed by the group during the same period include the design fabrication, and initial testing of a 300,000 ampere making switch for short circuit testing of homopolar generators. A small, easily portable, working model of a homopolar motor-generator was also designed and constructed during this period and it has already proved very useful in presentations and demonstrations. Finally, a fluidic tachometer and a fluidic rotor position sensor have been designed and built for use in high magnetic fields where conventional electronic instruments have not proven to be usable.
