Description

This research examines Orientalism in Northern Africa and the modern responses to it. Eugene Delacroix's "The Women of Algiers in their Apartment" is the main focus of the paper, along with Pablo Picasso's multiple reproductions, and Lalla Essaydi's photographic response. Specifically, the paper intends to place each painting in its social and cultural context, while comparing the original piece to the later pieces. Through this research I intend to observe how Orientalism portrays race and gender, as well as the reactions of different time periods and artists. Additionally, the intent of the artist will be critically examined to determine the implications of their pieces relating to the artist's gender and time period.
