Abstract
“Silvered Dreams” is a thirteen-minute composition for small orchestra, including a synthesizer. It is structured as a series of impressionistic episodes that alternate between the amorphous and atmospheric to the more tuneful and tonally structured. These episodes, ranging in length from five to thirty-seven measures, are composed around Episode 8, the longest section. This episode serves as the focal point of the composition where the more tonally structured tunes are finally allowed to predominate, without interruption from the previous atmospheric, less tonally structured material. Episode 9 ends the work suggesting a return to the material of the impressionistic opening and is structured so as to dissipate Episode 8’s culminating energy.
