Abstract
Apprenticeship in the United States is a system of training that is found almost exclusively in the private sector, and is prominent in only a relatively few industries and occupations. In those crafts and industries, however, especially in unionized construction, apprenticeship is a strong, well established efficient system whose importance is growing over time. In this article we present a brief description of apprenticeship in America, an assessment of its strengths, and an overview of the important issues confronting the system in the 1970 s.
