Item The 2017 Arkema Plant Explosion following Hurricane Harvey in Crosby, Texas(2018) Garza, Emily; Saad, Joseph; Kulhanek, MakenzieIn August of 2017, Hurricane Harvey brought destruction to southeast Texas. With the hurricane came extremely high water levels that the Crosby plant was not prepared for. In addition to underestimating the floodwaters, Arkema had not anticipated a total power outage at the plant. The Crosby plant housed thousands of pounds of organic peroxides, a chemical that is highly reactive and instable at temperatures above freezing. As water surrounded the emergency refrigeration trailers where organic peroxides had been moved to, temperatures inside the trailers increased and the peroxides began to self-heat, decompose, and combust. The combustion of three trailers caused an explosion whose effects are still felt in the Crosby community. The purpose of this report is to examine the decisions made by Arkema Chemical, using the AIChE code of ethics. Their decisions in preparation for Hurricane Harvey, during the hurricane and explosion, and after the explosion will be analyzed. Arkema acted unethically by not having the right preparations for Hurricane Harvey and not dealing with any after- effects on the community. If Arkema had reexamined their safety protocols after receiving ten OSHA violations, the result may have been different. Although Arkema employees acted ethically during their emergency response to Hurricane Harvey, they neither prepared sufficiently for intense flooding nor responded adequately to the after- effects on the community. Today, the Crosby plant is still running, but the explosion has not only made Arkema review their plans for natural disasters and general safety, but has made the entire chemical industry more aware of the need to be prepared for disasters no matter how improbable they may seem.Item The 2017 Arkema Plant Explosion following Hurricane Harvey in Crosby, Texas(2018) Kulhanek, Makenzie; Garza, Emily; Saad, JoeyIn August of 2017, Hurricane Harvey brought destruction to southeast Texas. I argue that the relationship between Victor Frankenstein and his quasi-child mirrors the lived experience of the author, Mary Shelley, and serves as a theoretical allusion to Femininity and Matrilineal Trauma.Item The Abolition of Slavery: A Myth and its Realities(2020) Ilangovan, SruthiItem Abstract: Exercise for Mental Health: Current Perspectives, Clinical Practice Implications, and Future Directions(2021) Carl, EmilyWith traces dating back to antiquity, exercise for mental health is not a new practice. However, in recent decades, empirical research has proliferated on exercise and its effect on mood, a number of mental health disorders, and the mechanisms that may explain these effects. In this article, we begin by reviewing the history of this area. Next, we offer an overview of cross-sectional and longitudinal research regarding short- and long-term correlates of exercise on mental health, evidence for a number of putative mechanisms, and results from clinical trials for mental health disorders. Finally, we conclude with suggested directions for future research and recommendations for clinicians who wish to add exercise prescription to their practice.Item Adeno-Associated Viral Vector Gene Therapy for Cystic Fibrosis: The Problems and Possible Solutions(2021-12-15) Esquivel, Rio LaylaItem Air Quality in the National Parks: Outcome of a Citizen Science Course Project Outcomes(2020) Chen, Anna; Sullivan, Colleen; Betts, Nicole; Hammons, Emilie; Illingworth, Parker; Sears, Libby; Johnson, Kristina; Larson, RowdyItem American Belly Dance: Authentic or Appropriated?(2020-11) Moharram, EamanneItem An Overview of Algorithmic Bias in Artificial Intelligence(2021) Kartha, NiteshArtificial Intelligence has grown throughout recent years to become a major part of popular culture and products used by people around the world. However, these systems are not perfect and can in fact contain multiple different biases in their underlying algorithms. In this paper, we provide an overview of the sources of algorithmic bias, a discussion of real-world case studies and their impacts, and a general summary of past attempts to address biases in artificial intelligence such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), corporate and governmental ethical guidelines, and New York City’s Automated Decision System (ADS) Task Force. Specifically, we discuss the COMPAS algorithm used for pretrial assessments, the Facebook ad-delivery algorithm used on its online advertising platform, and a healthcare algorithm used for high-risk care management in the United States. We conclude that algorithmic bias will only be exacerbated as more systems become automated through artificial intelligence. However, recognizing and calling for the alleviation of biases in current systems as well as approaching the design of automated systems holistically have led to reduced biases. More empirical research is required to fully understand what ways algorithmic bias can consistently be reduced.Item And Patroclus: A Portfolio(2020-10) Pratt, LeoItem Angry Girl(2022) Faruqi, HibaItem “Aquele Abraco”: Brazilian Protest Music in the Face of Repression(2023-04) Nustad, KaylaThis paper explores the relationship between Brazilian popular music and the military dictatorship. By focusing on three singers Geraldo Vandré, Caetano Veloso, and Chico Buarque, the range of musicians’ experiences confronting authoritarianism is seen through their responses to censorship and persecution. Censorship played a large role in the repression of culture and media during the Brazilian military dictatorship. Analyzing the experiences of musical artists provides a glimpse into both how leftist voices spoke out against oppression and how the military attempted to suppress them. Through public music festivals, new mass mediums, and innovative lyricism, artists of Brazilian popular music fought official censors to attempt to maintain connection to and hope within their audiences. Studying these interactions is pertinent because it is important to look at the ways censoring art can impact the artists and audiences, and how censorship was used to hide human rights violations.Item The Art of Somatopia(2015-05) Xie, AngelaItem Attitudes Towards Aeneas in Roman Asia Minor(2017) Layden, ChristopherItem Autobalkanism as a Source of Cultural Empowerment(2022-04) Enriquez, Erica ArleneItem Automated Batch Archival Processing: Preserving Arnold Wesker's Digital Manuscripts(2008) Kim, Sarah; Dong, Lorrie; Durden, MeganMany cultural institutions and archives expect to acquire an increasingly copious amount of born-digital materials that will need to be processed at the item level. However, limitations in technology, labor, and funding resources often hinder small and medium-sized cultural institutions in their efforts to adequately implement and maintain long-term preservation methods for their digital archival holdings. This paper is about the Arnold Wesker Digital Manuscripts preservation project. This project focused on developing an automated batch archival processing work flow that minimized the labor and time required when handling large electronic archival collections. By working with various software and digital tools, it was possible to take advantage of affordable and accessible technology to successfully process more than five thousand digital files with a limited amount of time and resources. It is hoped that this automated batch archival processing approach will encourage other cultural institutions to initiate dynamic preservation projects for their digital collections.Item Autonomy for Palestinian Women in Israel(2014-11-12) Nandwani, SaroshItem Big Top Risk for Reward: An Argument of Transdisciplinary Injury Prevention for Circus Performers(2023) Spencer, SamanthaThis argumentative essay hopes to inform readers of the risk for circus performers in modern day avant-garde performance, specifically Cirque Du Soleil, and promote the benefits of a company transition from monodisciplinary injury prevention to a transdisciplinary approach.
