Item Community Indicators: Improving Community Management, PRP 6(LBJ School of Public Affairs, 1974) Lineberry, Robert L.; Shoemaker, Paul E.; Mandel, Allan S.Item Urban Redevelopment and the Health of Black Residents in East Austin(2021) Sanchir, Michelle; West Ohueri, ChelsiEvery major city in America is experiencing urban redevelopment to sustain population growth, yet the related impacts of a changing landscape disproportionately harm Black low-income communities. Rising property values and displacement are a few factors that may contribute to quantifiable health disparities among racial groups. However, there is a need for more research that explains the relationship between displacement and specific health outcomes, especially in the context of the declining Black population in east Austin. This thesis seeks to enhance our understanding of the negative impacts of urban redevelopment on Black communities via two methods: a systematic literature review on metropolitan areas across the country and a case study on east Austin, Texas. The literature review characterizes twenty-seven sources, and findings indicate that stress, anxiety, and increased risk for cardiovascular disease appear to be prominent health implications due to exacerbated financial burdens, social pressures, and reduced access to vital services and fresh food. The stress associated with displacement may have intergenerational implications and could contribute to known health disparities in hypertension and diabetes. The case study on east Austin supports the literature review findings by mapping reduced access to healthcare services and fresh food markets external to gentrifying areas. Understanding the roots of health disparities consequential to urban redevelopment can help improve urban planning and policy to better address the needs of those harmed by gentrification.
