Item Impact Of Protected Areas On Western County Economic Outcomes, 1976 - 2014(2019-05-01) Orth, Sarah; Olmstead, SheilaA limited number of studies have approached the task of measuring the economic worth of conservation. Even fewer studies focus on the impact of protected areas. Additionally, past studies fall short of showing a causal effect of establishing protected areas. Using newly-created panel data showing a county’s exposure to protected areas over time, this paper attempts to find a causal relationship between protected areas and employment outcomes on the county level in the United States. Panel data allows for the use of fixed effects models, controlling for heterogeneity across counties and years. Results show ambiguous and sometimes conflicting outcomes on labor force, employment and unemployment, with no significant outcomes on the employment and unemployment rates.
