Item Adapting Consulting Practices for Struggling Students(2009) Bitzel, Alanna; Saathoff, Andrea; Hoffman, KimItem "Belonging To An Outlaw Tribe”: Identifying With Difference In Three Autobiographies By Bechdel, Anzaldúa And Allison(2019-05-01) Connolly, Katelyn Marie; MacKay, CarolMy thesis centers around the autobiographies and autobiographical fiction of American authors from underrepresented or marginalized communities. I am working with three texts, each of which defies traditional norms of the autobiographical genre, deviating in form, structure, language and perspective. This project seeks to establish how the integration of such texts into the American literary and historical canons can function as a tool in the process of identity construction for those who deviate from the white, male, heterosexual identity that dominates traditional American storytelling. In Fun Home, the graphic memoir by Alison Bechdel, the author opens new terrains of memory in the gaps between text and image. Gloria Anzaldúa depicts the landscape and emotions of dual culture in Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza, a hybrid text of English and Spanish, prose and poetry. Finally, Bastard Out of Carolina,by Dorothy Allison, demonstrates the power of “telling lies” in an autobiography, as a method of working through the effects of trauma. The significance of my inquiry lies in its social-justice and educational implications, and I strive towards more equitable representation in the academy and American schools, as well as the wider philosophical aim of advocating for every individual’s agency in telling their own story.Item Central Domains and Curriculum(2021) ¡Miranos!Item Comfort Empowers(2009) Sabatino, LindsayItem Item Curriculum(2021) ¡Miranos!Item Curriculum Books, Poems and Healthy Habits for Life Lessons(2021) ¡Miranos!Item Environmental Education: A Potential Foundation for Sustaining our Society(2019-11) MacClements, Victoria AnnThere is an ever-increasing need for sufficient environmental literacy instruction, especially for the contemporary generation of young people. The accruing complications of climate change due to anthropogenic activity will most affect the upcoming generation of students; therefore, it is paramount that they are sufficiently taught about the processes of climate change, human-nature relations, and the responsibility that we all have in remedying environmental degradation. Throughout the entire document, I call for explicit and consistent environmental and sustainability education for K-12 students: a necessary concentration that ought to be taught in all schools in Texas. I define the specific environmental and sustainability education that should be included in Texas curriculum, and identify the benefits for students, the environment, and their school and local communities. I also examine Texas’s Environmental Literacy Plan, and compare it to current Texas K-12 learning standards to assess whether Texas is honoring its commitment to environmental literacy in the most effective manner. I present Washington and Oregon’s environmental education learning standards as examples for Texas teachers, the State Board of Education, the Texas Education Agency, and policy makers to draw from for inspiration. Lastly, I reveal the challenges and barriers to individual Texas teachers taking on the responsibility of independently teaching environmentalism and sustainability, and implore Texas policy makers and affiliates to redesign K-12 learning standards with a uniform and specific inclusion of these topics.Item Feeding Strategies(2021) ¡Miranos!Item Food Tasting 2 Lesson Video: Rabbit Eating Carrot(2021) ¡Miranos!Item Food Tasting 6 Lesson Video: Turtle Eating Cucumber(2021) ¡Miranos!Item Food tasting with mystery box(2021) ¡Miranos!Item Food Tastings(2021) ¡Miranos!Item Glossary of Terms(2021) ¡Miranos!Item Healthy Contests(2021) ¡Miranos!Item Healthy Rural Texas: In-Person Intervention Materials(2024-05-16) Latino Research InstituteThis record consists of a series of presentations and accompanying documents developed by Y Living for the in-person intervention of the Healthy Rural Texas study. Although efforts have been made to increase mental health awareness, stigmatization still exists and contributes to people's misconceptions about those with mental health issues. Some people may not even be introduced to the concept of mental health until they are adults. It is important that, as we promote physical health to children, that we also promote mental health awareness, sp people can understand how to take care of themselves not only physically, but mentally as well. Currently in the state of Texas, despite its strong relevance to a person's well-being, there is no mental health education like what we see with physical education. Addressing this gap in our education is a key step toward improving mental health outcomes among our population. I will propose a mental health curriculum for seventh and eighth grade students in Texas that focuses on mental health disorders, positive psychology constructs (growth mindset, grit, mindfulness), stigma, communication, and resources. This curriculum will require students to take classes that work towards increasing awareness and general knowledge on positive and negative aspects of mental health. I will start with research on current mental health education programs across the nation, then focus specifically on similar efforts in Texas. It is hoped that increased education about mental health will decrease the stigma surrounding mental health issues. Also, this awareness could promote early intervention as students recognize mental health problems in themselves or in peers. The goal of this thesis is to identify key elements required for the implementation of mental health education in middle school curricula.Item Miranos Home-Based and Center Based Activity Schedule(2021) ¡Miranos!
