Item “The Basis of Aaaalll of Our Program!” The Start-Up Chile Playbook as Metagenre(IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication, 2023) Sabaj, Omar; Spinuzzi, Clay; Varas, Germán; Cabezas, Paula; Gerard, ValentinBackground: Following previous professional communication research into entrepreneurship, we examine key genres of a specific business accelerator, Start-Up Chile (SUP). Through a triangulated study of interviews, texts, and videos, we examine how the Playbook serves as a regulatory metagenre that represents the SUP experience to the participating firms. We find that aspects of the Playbook’s representation are at odds with the other data, divergences that we argue emerge from a broader tension among SUP’s stakeholders and goals. Literature review: We review the professional communication literature on entrepreneurship, literature on startups and accelerators, and on writing, activity, and genre research (WAGR). Specifically, we examine WAGR research on metagenres and professional identity formation. Research question: How does this successful international accelerator regularize the learning experience of its exceedingly diverse startups? Specifically, how does SUP regulate the startups’ different experiences, reframing the experience of entrepreneurship and teaching these startups to form their professional identity as entrepreneurs? Research methodology: We structured this research as a qualitative case study of SUP. Data included documents, videos, interviews, and social media. We triangulated these data sources to identify points of convergence (in which different data sources supported the same assertions) and divergence (in which data sources contradicted each other). Results: SUP provides the Playbook and Newsletter as metagenres that regulate complex interactions among other genres and events, guiding firms into having roughly equivalent experiences as well as maintaining relationships among volunteers such as mentors. But the Playbook also reframes the experience of entrepreneurship so that it can fit into SUP’s program: it reframes the cyclical entrepreneurship process as linear, and it reframes promises of future action as tracking of past actions. In undergoing these experiences, the startups form their professional identity as entrepreneurs. Conclusion: We conclude by discussing implications for accelerators as well as for how professional communication genres and metagenres regulate neophytes’ experiences in training programs more broadly.Item A Detection Of H Alpha In An Exoplanetary Exosphere(2012-06) Jensen, Adam G.; Redfield, Seth; Endl, Michael; Cochran, William D.; Koesterke, Lars; Barman, Travis; Endl, Michael; Cochran, William D.; Koesterke, LarsWe report on a search for H alpha absorption in four exoplanets. Strong features at H alpha are observed in the transmission spectra of both HD 189733b and HD 209458b. We attempt to characterize and remove the effects of stellar variability in HD 189733b, and along with an empirical Monte Carlo test the results imply a statistically significant transit-dependent feature of (-8.72 +/- 1.48) x 10(-4) integrated over a 16 angstrom band relative to the adjacent continuum. We interpret this as the first detection of this line in an exoplanetary atmosphere. A previous detection of Ly alpha in HD 189733b's atmosphere allows us to calculate an excitation temperature for hydrogen, T-exc = 2.6 x 10(4) K. This calculation depends significantly on certain simplifying assumptions. We explore these assumptions and argue that T-exc is very likely much greater than the radiative equilibrium temperature (the temperature the planet is assumed to be at based on stellar radiation and the planetary distance) of HD 189733b. A large T-exc implies a very low density that is not in thermodynamic equilibrium with the planet's lower atmosphere. We argue that the n = 2 hydrogen required to cause H alpha absorption in the atmosphere is created as a result of the greater UV flux at HD 189733b, which has the smallest orbit and most chromospherically active central star in our sample. Though the overall integration of HD 209458b's transmission spectrum over a wide band is consistent with zero, it contains a dramatic, statistically significant feature in the transmission spectrum with reflectional symmetry. We discuss possible physical processes that could cause this feature. Our remaining two targets (HD 147506b and HD 149026b) do not show any clear features, so we place upper limits on their H alpha absorption levels.Item Exploring Teacher and Student Perceptions of the Impact of Two Recess Periods per Day(Texas Education Review, 2018-09) Erwin, HeatherPurpose: The primary purpose of this study was to explore teacher and student perceptions of the implementation of two recess periods per day. Method: Participants were 12 teachers (representing all grade levels and areas) and 13 students (representing all grade levels) from a K-5 elementary school in the Southeastern United States. All participants took part in interviews regarding their perceptions towards having two recess periods per day. Data analysis included transcribing data, detecting preliminary themes through constant comparison, and narrowing of themes from preliminary themes. Results: Five themes were ultimately revealed: Activity, behavior and student engagement, quantity vs. quality, socialization, and teacher-student “contract.” Conclusions: A school-wide policy of two recess periods per day was perceived positively by faculty and students because they believed students are more active, stronger bonds formed between students and teachers, primary children played together, earlier, and lessons had more depth and intensity.Item Targeting Antioxidant Pathways with Ferrocenylated N-Heterocyclic Carbene Supported Gold(I) Complexes in A549 Lung Cancer Cells(2015-10) Arambula, J. L.; Arumugam, K.Ferrocene containing N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligated gold(I) complexes of the type [Au(NHC)(2)](+) were prepared and found to be capable of regulating the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) via multiple mechanisms. Single crystal X-ray analysis of bis(1-(ferrocenylmethyl)-3-mesitylimidazol-2-ylidene)-gold(I) chloride (5) and bis(1,3-di(ferrocenylmethyl)imidazol-2-ylidene)-gold(I) chloride (6) revealed a quasi-linear geometry around the gold(I) centers (i.e., the C-Au-C bond angle were measured to be similar to 177 degrees and all the Au-C-carbene bonds distances were in the range of 2.00 (7)-2.03 (1) angstrom). A series of cell studies indicated that cell proliferation inhibition and ROS generation were directly proportional to the amount of ferrocene contained within the [Au(NHC)(2)](+) complexes (IC50 of 6 < 5 < bis(1-benzyl-3-mesitylimidazol-2-ylidene)-gold(I) chloride (4)). Complexes 4-6 were also confirmed to inhibit thioredoxin reductase as inferred from lipoate reduction assays and increased chelatable intracellular zinc concentrations. RNA microarray gene expression assays revealed that 6 induces endoplasmic reticulum stress response pathways as a result of ROS increase.
