    By presenting a brief history of scholarship on Russian Orthodox “Znamenny” chant in the modern era, and an investigation of the theological role and place of Znamenny chant in the liturgical life of the Church, this report identifies a gap in current sacred music scholarship regarding the intersection of faith and musical analysis of chant.
