Item Yen backed security : Japan, southeast Asia, and Asia’s quiet security realignment(2024-05) Ashley, Ryan Charles ; Greitens, Sheena Chestnut; SATO Yoichiro; William Inboden; Jaganath Sankaran; Patricia MaclachlanThis dissertation examines a quiet realignment in Indo-Pacific security, Japan’s deepening security relations with Southeast Asia. It argues that Japan’s long-term and mutually beneficial economic relationships with the region created a foundation of strategic trust, leading to deepening security relations following pivotal events in 2012. This shift is examined on its own terms, through a theoretical lens outside of the considerations of competition between the United States and China. It also contextualizes Tokyo’s strategic priorities in Southeast Asia through the historical framework of “nanshinron,” which has declared a geopolitical imperative for Japanese influence in the region since the late 19th century. The research uses a multi-method approach, combining a novel inventory of security interactions, case studies of the Philippines, Indonesia, and Cambodia, and interviews with defense officials and experts. This dissertation offers new insights into the role of economic partnerships in shaping security partnerships in Southeast Asia.
