Item The Mentor Perspective: Understanding the Mentor Mindset within the Plan II/KIPP Partnership at the University of Texas at Austin(2023-05) Garza, BrittneyYouth mentoring is a concept that has been in existence for a very long time and will continue to be prevalent in generations to come. Formal youth mentoring is a tool first established in the United States of America over a century ago with the hopes of positively impacting children, particularly at-risk youth. The prevalence of youth mentoring programs continues to grow, but the research into the true benefit of these programs, specifically with the central focus being mentors, is just starting to develop. With the idea of the mentor mindset at its focus, this thesis gives an account of the current state of mentoring programs within the United States and emphasizes the need to remain realistic about the positive effects of mentoring. Two youth mentoring programs, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Plan II/KIPP Partnership, will be assessed and compared based on two sets of standards to create quality relationships between mentors and mentees and support mentors in fostering those connections. From there, recommendations will be made on ways to potentially improve the Plan II/KIPP Partnership’s program in a way that will improve the feeling of community and support for its mentors. It should be noted that my personal experience within the Plan II/KIPP Partnership as a mentor within the KIPP Austin Academy of Arts & Letters will be used to give an insider perspective of the impact of its program on its mentors.
