Item Antireflection nanostructures at material interfaces for enhancement of optical properties(2021-07-07) Chen, Yi-An, Ph. D.; Chang, Chih-Hao, Ph. D.; Sreenivasan, S.V.; Ben-Yakar, Adela; Wasserman, DanielBioinspired nanomaterials and nanostructures have drawn increasing interest and attention because of their attractive optical, or mechanical properties. For example, nacre has a complex hierarchical architecture in both nanometer and micrometer scales, which leads to an excellent combination of stiffness, low weight, and energy dissipation. This nano-architecture have inspired researchers to create artificial nacre material for applications in protective armor. Another example is the antireflection nanostructures (AR) that can be used to mitigate light reflection from an optically polished surface. The surface reflection can be attributed to a refractive index mismatch at the air-solid interface, which causes Fresnel reflection losses and reduces transmission. We will further discuss detail about light interaction at material interfaces. Then, we will study design and fabrication process of interfacial nanostructures. Optical performance enhancement by applying interfacial nanostructures will be addressed
