Item Reflections on the integration of the visual arts in a literature-based reading program in an urban school setting(2007-12-22) Post, Tracy Michelle; Field, Sherry L.The purpose of this study was to develop a case study of teaching and learning in an art-integrated reading program. Specifically, it studied the impact of the visual arts over a period of several years in a self-contained fifth grade classroom that consisted primarily of students who were identified as high-risk. A qualitative, action-based research methodology was used to describe the activities that were employed in the classroom. Data was collected over a period of two years, including journals of teacher reflections, and documents from the classroom, such as student work, art work, surveys, and reading scores from the state mandated standardized tests. The findings conclude that in this classroom art integration resulted in lessons that were culturally relevant, and improved the social and emotional well-being of students by providing them opportunities for personal expression. The findings also show that art-integration helped to improve reading test scores in this specific classroom. The teacher noticed increased opportunities for reflection upon her teaching practices, and improved teacher and student motivation.
