Item I'm from everywhere : articulations of queer identity in online spaces(2010-05) Hill, Erica Ruth; Mallapragada, Madhavi; Fuller, JenniferThis thesis is an exploration of the various ways in which queer identity has been subsumed within an urban sensibility by mainstream culture, and how mediated articulations of queerness have subsequently been impacted. Highlighting the influence of late capitalism within the creation of a categorical “queer” identity, this work connects the history of the gentrified gayborhood to televisual and filmic representations of urban and rural queers. Interrogating legacy media representations opens up a conversation about how new media articulations of queerness might operate in the digital age. Examinations of popular queer websites, Downelink, GLEE and I’m From Driftwood illustrate the reification of common LGBTQ identity tropes, as well as highlight the spaces where queer affect theory might perform a critical intervention in how new media scholars might approach future research of online sources.Item LatinX LGBTQ Collection(2021-10) UT LibrariesItem Why a "somewhat asexual" Daryl Dixon is not enough : the importance of labels in queer media(2019-11-25) Johnson, Reinier; Scott, Suzanne, 1979-This report will reveal the ways in which Daryl Dixon serves as complex asexual representation by breaking down the harmful, horror-centric stereotypes former depictions of asexuality have created; confront the lack of literature around asexuality that has created the conditions for such stereotypes to flourish; and highlight an example of the gross misunderstandings that have occurred due to this phenomenon for the purpose of challenging others to diversify their understandings of asexuality in the future. This work will be presented through the accessible, multi-media form of Prezi. Prezi is a valuable format for this discussion because it is available to anybody with internet access for free and allows many different forms of learning to co-exist. Everything from visual and textual products to auditory and interactive components of engagement work together to convey meaning in a Prezi presentation. An in-depth Prezi presentation offers more story development opportunities, creative freedoms, and the accessibility needed to create the best type of project for the intended audiences—fans, academics, and the asexual community. Though the presentation is available on Prezi through a weblink, this statement serves as a supplemental document to both describe the project and its objectives and discuss Prezi as a form for free, accessible academic argument
