Modeling the "effective capacitance" of RC interconnect

With finer line widths and faster switching speeds, the resistance of on-chip metal interconnect is having a dominant impact on the temporal behavior of logic gates. As this effect becomes significant, the total capacitance of the RC interconnect is shielded from the gate, and the gate delay may be less than expected. An analytical expression for the "effective" load capacitance of the interconnect is presented. In addition, when there is significant shielding, the response at the gate output may have a large exponential tail. Modeling the waveform in terms of a delay and a transition time value can be very difficult. An algorithm is implemented as an extension of the "effective" capacitance which captures the complete behavior of the gate-output using a two-piece waveform fit. Finally, a new approach is proposed as future work in which the driving gate is modeled by a single dc gate resistance, and a ramp voltage source, where the voltage source characteristics are a function of the input transition time and the RC interconnect
