Item How Language and Culture Influence Television’s Interpretation of Business(2022) Barrero, Lauren; Oppenheim, Robert M.Television sways how viewers perceive things, but what is left unspoken are the factors behind the screen that influence what we see. Some of these major factors include language and culture, which can affect how television interprets scenarios. This paper focuses on television’s interpretation of a specific situation: the business setting. I will be analyzing different television dramas from America, Russia, and Korea. Television has glamorized the business world, for better or for worse, and it is important to take a step back and analyze just how over-dramatized it can be while attempting to display a realistic reality. Language and culture play and important role when it comes to which aspects of business that television chooses to inflate or make disappear. While America may focus on office banter or giving employers a difficult time, Korea may focus on respect for higher-ups or an unlikely office romance; meanwhile, Russia could be focusing the business world as a dangerous occupation that requires a protagonist to constantly look over their shoulder. All these realities could be a possible in the business world, and yet culture and language steer television into differing directions. There is also the occasional show that is produced in one country and then re-made and adapted in another culture; in these cases, there is clearly a new interpretation presented on how the characters act and how one event can lead to another. By analyzing specific television shows from Russia, Korea, and America, we may be able to get one step closer to realizing just how much of an impact culture and language influence our everyday lives (including the devices that help us escape reality). We can begin to develop an understanding of what stereotypes become the most common in our shows stemming from our culture and decide whether we want to be viewed that way. The realization of television’s interpretation of a culture can allow us to have the power to change how it is perceived. Television continues to increase in importance in many lives, whether it is a positive or negative part of life; By discovering some of the major unintentional influences over shows, we ultimately gain a step in understanding why cultures think the way they do. We can realize that each culture has values which should be understood and appreciated, no matter their origin.
