Item Atmospheric Control during Direct Selective Laser Sintering of Stainless Steel 314S Powder(1999) Hauser, C.; Childs, T.H.C.; Dalgarno, K.W.; Eane, R.B.Stainless steel grade 314S powders have been Selective Laser Sintered (SLS) in three different argon/air (oxygen) atmospheric mixtures. The amount of oxygen present during the heating, melting and fusing of the metal powder strongly limits the range of laser powers and scanning speeds for successful processing. As oxygen levels diminish, powder oxidation reduces. This reduces absorption of laser energy as well as balling and other detrimental surface phenomena. This paper reports the conditions for creating sintered layers and observations of part quality variation within these conditions. Sintered microstructure observations are also helpful in determining thermal history changes.Item Estimating high resolution atmospheric phase screens from differential InSAR measurements(2010-05) Yang, Dochul; Buckley, Sean M.; Tapley, Byron D.; Schutz, Bob E.; Lightsey, Glenn; Wilson, Clark R.Atmospheric artifacts superimposed on interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) measurements have the potential to greatly impede the accurate estimation of deformation signals. The research presented in this dissertation demonstrates a novel InSAR time series algorithm, called HiRAPS algorithm, for effectively estimating high resolution atmospheric phase screens (APS) from differential InSAR measurements. In summary, the HiRAPS algorithm utilizes short time span differential interferograms and rearranges components of existing advanced InSAR techniques to identify a higher density of scatterers used to create the APS. The improved scatterer density allows one to estimate high spatial frequency atmospheric signals not recovered from existing InSAR time series techniques. The HiRAPS algorithm was tested with simulated and actual data, which contain phase contributions from linear and nonlinear deformation, topographic height errors, and atmospheric artifacts. Simulated differential interferograms were generated to have the same spatial and temporal baselines as the actual differential interferograms formed from RADARSAT-1 data over Phoenix, Arizona. The APS superimposed on simulated differential interferograms were then estimated and compared to simulated APS. The root mean square error (RMSE) between the estimated and simulated APS was calculated to qualitatively assess the different values obtained. The RMSE was 0.26 radians when utilizing the HiRAPS algorithm, compared to an RMSE value of 0.39 radians using an implementation of the permanent scatterer (PS) algorithm. The HiRAPS algorithm also showed its applicability for estimating high spatial frequency atmospheric signals for actual data. Sixty-six SAR images, starting from October 5, 2002 and spanning 5 years, were processed for this research. The APS pixel density obtained using the HiRAPS algorithm was 253 pixels per square kilometer, compared to 14 pixels per square kilometer utilizing the PS algorithm. The APS superimposed on the differential interferograms were estimated with both the proposed and PS algorithms. High resolution APS were estimated with the HiRAPS algorithm, whereas only low resolution APS were obtained with the PS algorithm. After estimating and removing estimated APS, the phase stability of APS-free differential interferograms was examined by identifying the permanent scatterers (PS). The final density of identified PS obtained with the HiRAPS algorithm was 453 PS per square kilometer, whereas the density of detected PS using the generic PS algorithm was 381 PS per square kilometer. The maximum difference in the deformation time series between the HiRAPS algorithm and the PS algorithm was less than 6 mm. However, the HiRAPS algorithm resulted in less apparent noise in the time series than the PS algorithm due to the precise estimation of APS.Item Proximity operations of nanosatellites in Low Earth Orbit(2013-12) Almond, Scott Douglas; Lightsey, E. GlennA mission architecture consisting of two NASA LONESTAR-2 satellites in Low Earth Orbit is considered. The craft are equipped with cross-communication radios and GPS units. Analyses are conducted for ejection, thruster and attitude maneuvers to achieve objectives of the mission, including sustained communications between the craft. Simulations are conducted to determine the duration of the communication window following the initial separation of the two craft. Recommendations are made to maximize this window while accounting for attitude constraints and the effects of atmospheric drag. Orbital mechanics and control theory are employed to form an algorithm for filtering GPS position fixes. The orbit-determination algorithm accounts for the effects of drag and Earth’s oblateness. Procedures are formed for verifying the initial separation velocities of two spacecraft and for measuring the velocity imparted by impulsive thruster maneuvers. An algorithm is also created to plan the timing and magnitude of corrective thruster maneuvers to align the orbital planes of the two craft. When the craft pass out of communication range, a ground station is used to relay data and commands to conduct state rendezvous procedures. A plan for coordinated attitude maneuvers is developed to strategically utilize the cumulative effects of drag and orbit decay to align the craft over long time periods. The methodologies developed here extend prior research into close proximity operations, forming the foundation for autonomous on-orbit rendezvous under a broader set of initial conditions.Item Validation of ionospheric electron density profiles inferred from GPS occulation observations of the GPS/MET experiment(2001-08) Kawakami, Todd Mori; Tapley, Byron D.In April of 1995, the launch of the GPS Meteorology Experiment (GPS/MET) onboard the Orbview-1 satellite, formerly known as Microlab1, provided the first technology demonstration of active limb sounding of the Earth’s atmosphere with a low Earth orbiting spacecraft utilizing the signals transmitted by the satellites of the Global Positioning System (GPS). Though the experiment’s primary mission was to probe the troposphere and stratosphere, GPS/MET was also capable of making radio occultation observations of the ionosphere. The application of the GPS occultation technique to the upper atmosphere created a unique opportunity to conduct ionospheric research with an unprecedented global viii distribution of observations. For operational support requirements, the Abel transform could be employed to invert the horizontal TEC profiles computed from the L1 and L2 phase measurements observed by GPS/MET into electron density profiles versus altitude in near real time. The usefulness of the method depends on how effectively the TEC limb profiles can be transformed into vertical electron density profiles. An assessment of GPS/MET’s ability to determine electron density profiles needs to be examined to validate the significance of the GPS occultation method as a new and complementary ionospheric research tool to enhance the observational databases and improve space weather modeling and forecasting. To that end, simulations of the occultation observations and their inversions have been conducted to test the Abel transform algorithm and to provide qualitative information about the type and range of errors that might be experienced during the processing of real data. Comparisons of the electron density profiles inferred from real GPS/MET observations are then compared with coincident in situ measurements from the satellites of the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) and ground-based remote sensing from digisonde and incoherent scatter radar facilities. The principal focus of this study is the validation of the electron density profiles inferred from GPS occultation observations using the Abel transform.
