Battle Hall and the West Mall Building, two adjacent buildings on the UTSoA campus, are currently slated for major renovation. The Battle Hall-West Mall Owner’s Project Requirements – which define the objectives for the project - call for the renovation project to exemplify best practices in combining historic preservation with sustainable design. They also call for making the finished project, as well as the development process, an opportunity for research and teaching. In 2012 the Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) launched an initiative, called BattleLab, to leverage the renovation project to enhance curriculum, research, and practice in the School of Architecture and UT community. Since then, students, faculty, staff and industry partners have been engaging in research around BattleLab. The information these researchers produce will be stored here in an effort to make the Battle Hall and West Mall complex a data-rich case study for future faculty and students.
