Combatting a Criticism O f Journalism Students T h at they know really very little of the down-to-earth work of putting out a newspaper is one of the most vital criticism s made by professional newspaper men of college and university students of journalism . Nine years ago Dr, Charles D. Johnson, then a mem ber of the journalism fa tu ity of B a y lo r U niversity, de termined to combat this criticism , He organized the South west Jo urn alism Congress, which he hoped would tend to fuse the aims and methods of the professional and scho lastic journalistic groups and at the same time bring into closer contact the teachers and students of journalism . The movement began and gathered force, and F rid a y J delegates from the U niversity w ill represent one of the Congress's thirteen member schools at the U n iversity ol O klahom a. It took Dr. Johnson eight years to prove that his idea would product* results, but last year confirm ation ol the usefulness of the C o n g r e s s came w h e n an organization of the same nature was formed in tile Southeastern states. N ow the National Association of reachers of Jo u rn alism have divided the United States into districts and plan to establish sim ilar congresses for journalism teachers over the entire nation. A t the Congress F rid a y and Satu rd ay, a day and a hall I he w ill be devoted to talks by professional journalists. rem aining h alf day w ill be given over to discussion groups of both students and teachers T h e student groups w ill eon sider the d ifferen t phases of student publication problems, w hile the teachers w ill gather new ideas and slants on in struction and on the supervision of student publications. The teaching of journalism is a d ifficu lt and re la tive ly new thing. And its grow th and im provem ent is and w ill continue to be retarded b y the rig id ity which b e lo n g s to all institutions. The c o n g r e s s e s , through the inter-change of new ideas and better m e t h o d s , can t a k e cognizance of the demands of changing conditions and be a potential force for the progress <>f journalism and its a rriv a l to a higher place among the trio* professions. The University is Honored T h at the annual convention of the Mississippi \ alley Historical Association, which begins here today, is o n e ot the most im portant meetings of its kind ever to be held here is the least that can be said concerning this o rgan i zation and its relatio n to the U niversity. Its value to U niversity prestige is easily recognized when oiK’ views the fact that it is the largest association in the world devoted entirely to the study of A m erican his tory anti the second largest historical society in the w orld. Then, too, the convention is bringing here some of the most im portant historians in the country. More than tw elve states w ill be represented in attendance. The idea behind a meeting of this kind is one of world progress and education. T here can be no o rd erly world progress without real enlightenm ent ot the {last. It is tie purpose of this annual meeting to bring to light important inroads and research into Am erican history. Again, in this instance, can be seen the value to I exas of th** Centennial which was instrum ental in bringing the convention to this state. It is the lirst time in twenty-nine annual meetings that the association has met here. Texas is world-famous for its colorful civic history B u t the bulk of it is yet unrecorded. An enormous amount of inform ation w hich could be used for contem porary en lightenm ent and leading is still in the raw and aw aits tie re w orkm anship of the historian. Much ot recorded is no m on attractive or com prehensible than so that w hich m any dead bones uncovered. The University is honored by the convention of an es teemed group of scholars and historians. \\ e welcome them to the campus with the hope that th e ir influence w ill be applied to the progress of the historical division of this institution and eventually to the increased historical enlightenm ent of Texas and the* Southwest.
