Nine More Days C g m S p irit Be M aintained T AST TH U R SDA Y th* S t u d e n t Assem- bly took a vitally-needed long-range, spirit-building step forward in the estab lishm ent of a perm anent advisory commit tee to assist the University yell leaders. action t h a t a A lthough the Assembly came rather late in the football y ear (and not te m p o r ar y d is re ga rd in g the fact committee did m a k e a ha lf- he art ed at tem pt to fu nction), it may yet prove to be one of the most constructive pieces of leg islation to be tu rn ed out by t h a t body this year— curre nt football doldrums notwith standing. Especially to be commended was the selection of Colonel George E. Hurt, band director, as the official faculty advisor; his presence was felt as early as the pre- T.C.U. rally on F ri d a y night, twenty-four hours af te r his app ointment. least pointed out to them t h a t concerted action w a s absolutely needed, and h a d in spired th e introduction of the new yells. F o rtu n at el y, one of the stu den t m e m be rs of the advisory committee, Bobby Bush, was one of the yell leaders, which m a d e coop era tion much easier. Significant of the new set-up is t h a t the yell le ade rs themselves, formerly r e s p o n sible directly to the s tu de n t body which, once having elected them, had no influence, must now heed a responsive e a r to th e As sembl y— thro u gh its appointed*r e p r e s e n t a tives— and especially to Colonel H ur t. The latter, especially, was th e most logi cal choice for this advisory capacity, h a v ing been the unofficial nominee of th e yell leaders themselves. As band director, the br un t of the coordin ate d pep rally efforts w ere a l r e a d y on his shoulders. W it ho ut going into the relevance of a r guments being tossed back and forth on the cam pus concerning the responsibility for Te xa s ’s loss last S aturday , it seems safe to say t h a t s tu d en t spirit was definitely not lacking. On t h a t point th ere is unani mous agre em ent. This spirit, however, was manifest as early as the preceding S a tu r d a y when the r et ur ni ng Baylor-tied football team was gr eeted with a gigantic soul-cheering rally. It could h ar d ly be attrib ut ed to the action of the Assembly which came late in the week. The introduction of several new and othe r little-used yells F r id a y night and the s udden correlation of movement and action on the p ar ts of the yell leaders do, though, show the unmi stak abl e influence of some outside individual: The Texan feels t h a t this was due entirely to Colonel Hurt. Taki ng an add ed amou nt of initiative which h ad been lacking, Colonel H u r t had leaders together, h ad a t called the yell I m m edi at ely a h e a d now ar e nine days when s tu d e n t spirit morale will be given the most crucial test in years. H avi ng w o r k ed itself up to a fr en zy once— only to see all hopes d a s h e d — th e s t u d e n t body will be asked to rep ea t. It m u s t r e p e a t. This time the only incentive to win is tradition — with no hope f o r so much as a glimpse at the Conference th ro n e room an d only a fighting chan ce for s p e c ta to r s ’ tickets to national howl ga m es in which t h e i r team will not play. P e r h a p s nightly pep rallies ar e not n e e d ed to achieve this continued spirit which has so little for a real f o un da ti on — in com parison to an equal tradition plus national glory on the o th e r side. Plus a jinx. But cooperation to the utmost will be ur ged of every student. It will be urged by Coach Dana X. Bible, th e team, and th e yell le ad ers. The Tex an trusts Mr. Bible to do his p a r t with the team and Colonel H u r t to do his with the yell leaders. The rest is up to th e students.— B. 2. K.
